- Baja Sharkeez is one of the top tax revenue producers for the City of Hermosa Beach.
- Our planned expansion only increases occupancy by 23% from 233 to 299, not double as our opponents would want you to believe.
- Sharkeez is designated as a restaurant now adding needed banquet facilities and handicapped accommodations.
- 60% of Sharkeez business is generated from food sales, even without banquet room.
After an electrical fire gutted Baja Sharkeez in May 2006, life-long residents and owners Ron & Greg Newman vowed to rebuild. They have been encouraged by loyal patrons and a City Council wanting to see the Pier Plaza restored.
“We were very lucky. No one was hurt and no adjoining structures were damaged. We took this as a sign to not just pick up the pieces, but to make Sharkeez an even more welcoming and accommodating restaurant for all.”
- Greg Newman
It's true that we're expanding the size of the restaurant. However, we're not doing this to increase capacity. We're trying to accommodate people with disabilities, some of whom may be in wheelchairs, so that everyone can enjoy dining at Sharkeez.”“ - Ron Newman
Small Business Owner Reaffirms Commitment to Hermosa Beach
Sharkeez is Good Business for Hermosa Beach
- Though the restaurant size will increase by 2000 square feet, 60% of this expansion will be done to accommodate the handicapped and added office/storage space.
- Noise will be significantly reduced with removal of outside TVs and music speakers from the entire patio area, heavy outside doors and early 10pm closure of retractable skylight.
- Disturbance calls to the Pier have steadily declined since 2004 with or without Sharkeez due to increased police patrols.
- The Pier is an attraction and restaurants are a major draw for many people.
The New and Improved Baja Sharkeez Offers Hermosa Beach:
- Enjoyable place to relax with friends, family and colleagues
- Accessibility to all patrons
- Additional banquet facilities for a city with very few
- Generous contributor to all community causes
- Good neighbor with adequate soundproofing and early closing of second floor
- Successful business generating good jobs and considerable revenue for the city
- Payment of $580,000 toward the planned Upper Pier Parking Structure, which now has a large amount of the funding needed to build
Elected Officials already have a satisfactory plan that addresses the parking problems at the pier.
The Hermosa Beach City Council and Planning Commission have approved Sharkeez expansion and passed City Ordinance 01-1278 to allow for required parking to be away from the plaza, rather than on-site because of they want to preserve the sweeping pedestrian courtyard.
Sharkeez has already contributed $580,000 the City Parking Fund to create additional parking for residents and visitors in the planned Upper Pier Parking Structure, which now has a large amount of the funding needed to build.
